In 1984, an area-wide social service task force was formed to address the needs of latch-key children. Efforts continued over the next two years and in 1986, the first Kids After School Program with Enrichment and Recreation (KASPER) was started as a cooperative effort between the park district, Village of Schaumburg, School District 54 and Twinbrook YMCA to provide after-school care for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. KASPER has grown from 49 children at two sites in 1986 to include before- and after-school care for over 900 children at 11 sites in 2011.
Activities include arts and crafts, sports, games, creative play, board games and more. A quiet area is provided for children who wish to do homework. Morning care is from 7AM until the start of school. Afternoon care is from the end of school until 6PM.
The Schaumburg Park District offers AM and PM care at Aldrin, Blackwell, Campanelli, Collins, Dirksen, Dooley, Enders-Salk, Hale, Hoover and Nerge schools, and the Community Recreation Center. Space is limited to 50 children per day, per school, with limited three-day availability.
