Dealing with the physical stress and social changes of sudden unemployment is now a little easier for residents of the Schaumburg Park District.
The District’s Unemployment Support Package is designed to provide fitness and recreation options at no or low cost, and is renewable every 30 days.
“The package is tangible encouragement the District provides to residents experiencing the anxiety and isolation of unemployment,” said Executive Director Jean Schlinkmann.
Included are passes for workouts at fitness centers and swimming. The package is geared to provide daytime fitness-related activities for adults, and is not structured for entire families. Family scholarships are available through the Park Foundation’s assistance program.
The program is open to Schaumburg Park District residents with valid identification (driver's license or state ID) and proof of employment termination. Unemployment verification is required in the form of a check stub or “approval of benefits” letter from the Illinois Department of Employment.
Applications for the program will be processed daily, 8AM to 5PM, at the Jerry Handlon Administration Building, 235 E. Beech Drive in Schaumburg. Packets are renewable every 30 days with updated unemployment verification.

“We also have a number of fun volunteer opportunities where participants will connect with their community, make new friends and keep active,” Schlinkmann said. “Volunteers always are welcome for projects at Spring Valley Nature Center and Heritage Farm, and helping with general Park District events.”
