Schaumburg Park District is set to go smoke free in the new year.
A policy recently approved by the Schaumburg Board of Park Commissioners will prohibit smoking and tobacco products on all District properties excluding Schaumburg Golf Club and Walnut Greens Golf Course. The policy, which also includes e-cigarettes and similar devices, goes into effect Jan. 1.
“As an agency that works to promote health and wellness among patrons, we want to institute policies that reflect that philosophy,” said Executive Director Tony LaFrenere. “We hope the smoke-free measure will set a positive example and show the public we care about their safety and wellbeing.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that smoking increases the risk of cancer, stroke and respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Eliminating smoking from all homes, worksites and public places protects nonsmokers from the dangers of secondhand smoke.
