Butterflies, bees and hummingbirds will buzz with glee visiting native plants, which can be pre-ordered or purchased on site at Schaumburg Park District’s Native Plant Sale!
Gardeners will discover a large variety of native shrubs, wildflowers and grasses suitable for home landscape on May 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Taking place at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road, garden experts will be on-hand to answer any questions. Heirloom vegetables and herbs also will be available for purchase.
“Native plant gardening sounds intimidating at first, but our patrons are pleasantly surprised to find out how easy they are to plant and maintain compared to non-native plants,” said Dave Brooks, Spring Valley manager. “The bonus is the beautiful wildlife they attract to their gardens, such as vivid monarch butterflies and plump bumble bees.”
According to the National Audobon Society, native plants are adapted to local environmental conditions, require less water, save time and money compared to non-native plants, and best of all, provide a vital habitat for birds and many other species of wildlife.
Order forms for native plants are available online at SchaumburgGardenClub.org and for heirloom vegetables at SpringValleyNatureClub.org. Order forms also may be picked up at the Nature Center.
