Schaumburg Park District’s Tony LaFrenere Honored as PGA of America Golf Executive of the Year

Tony LaFrenere, PGA, Executive Director of Schaumburg Park District, was honored on Nov. 4 as the 2025 PGA of America Golf Executive of the Year at the PGA of America's national awards dinner in Frisco, Texas.

This national award recognizes outstanding service in executive management, leadership and vision — but for LaFrenere, the honor represents something deeper: a lifelong connection to the Schaumburg community he has called home since childhood.

“It’s been incredibly rewarding and has truly come full circle,” LaFrenere said. “I grew up in Schaumburg. It’s where I learned to love the game, where my wife Julie and I raised our children, and where I’ve had the privilege to serve the same community that shaped me. What’s most fulfilling is seeing our staff and facilities help residents of all ages connect — whether it’s a kid learning golf, a senior staying active or a family spending time together. That’s what makes it all worthwhile.”

A PGA of America member since 1995, LaFrenere has served as Schaumburg Park District’s Executive Director since 2012, overseeing a portfolio that serves more than 78,000 residents. Under his leadership, the District has expanded recreational opportunities and strengthened community connection through innovation, inclusion and investment in facilities.

LaFrenere led a complete renovation of all  of Schaumburg Golf Club's 27 holes, transforming it into one of the top 50 public courses in the nation. Annual rounds have grown from 50,000 to over 74,000, reflecting the course’s reputation as a welcoming and high-quality public golf experience. Beyond golf, his leadership has guided the creation of new pickleball courts, the Meineke Park Challenge Course and the beloved Bison’s Bluff Nature Playground, where over 90,000 children a year play.

“It starts with people,” LaFrenere said. “Whether it’s maintaining award-winning facilities, greeting families by name or launching new programs that bring people together, we’ve built a culture where staff feel empowered to make a difference. If you trust your people and give them the tools to succeed, excellence follows. It’s amazing what happens when you mix passion and purpose every day.”

Looking ahead, LaFrenere is focused on sustainability, wellness and continued community impact. “Our goal is always the same and that is to keep Schaumburg a place where people love to live, work and play,” he said.

LaFrenere also credited his family, mentors and colleagues for their support. “I’m so lucky to have an incredible support system of people who have believed in me every step of the way,” he said. “And to my board and staff, I share this award with all of you. Your pride and teamwork are what make Schaumburg special.”

A dedicated PGA member and community leader, LaFrenere previously received the Illinois PGA Executive of the Year award in 2022. Before leading Schaumburg Park District, he held leadership roles at the Hoffman Estates Park District.
