Coronavirus Response

Coronavirus Response

May 22, 2020

updated 11:30 a.m.

As the State moves into phase 3 of the Restore Illinois Plan on May 29, some current restrictions are being eased. As we learn more, we will make announcements concerning specific service areas on this page.

Schaumburg Park District is committed to the health and safety of our guests and staff. The District continues to monitor the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, along with the guidelines and safety information released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Illinois Department of Public Health. Please read the information below to learn more about the District's response.

Summer Camps

Summer day camps will not be offered in June. If health regulations allow, we will offer limited day camp options starting in July. All those who registered for a day camp that starts in June will be issued a credit back to their Park District account to use on a future program. The Park District will be releasing a virtual guide later this week with activities that can be done from home.

Summer Pool Season

For the health and safety of our guests and staff, pools will not open Memorial Day weekend. Public pool operations are not included in Phase 3 of the Restore Illinois plan. Additionally, the governing authority of public pools in Illinois, the Illinois Department of Public Health, has yet to issue guidelines or recommendations on the safe operation of pools. The health, safety, operational and financial challenges related to operating pools under social distancing protocols for an abbreviated session are also being considered. We will continue to reevaluate this decision over the coming months and, if able, we may investigate limited pool options later in the summer. Refunds will be issued to anyone who previously purchased a pass. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Programs and Events

Based on the stay-at-home order issued by Governor Pritzker, all recreation centers, operations and playgrounds are closed and in person programs, events and rentals are canceled indefinitely. With the stay-at-home order still in effect, and the dates of the Restore Illinois phased reopening uncertain, we will not be releasing a traditional summer program guide. Instead, each month, we will bring you a virtual program guide that will include fun program options including a Virtual 5K and magic classes. Look for the virtual guide later this week here If able, we may return to in-person programming later in the summer. All special events scheduled for June are canceled.

Fitness Centers

Per the Restore Illinois Plan, fitness centers remain closed at least through Phase 3 of the plan. If this directive is updated, we will adapt accordingly. Staff have been working in facilities to spread out equipment so that, when able, we can quickly and safely return to operations.

Outdoor Tennis

Per specific guidance from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, all District outdoor tennis courts are open for singles play effective May 15, 2020.

Schaumburg Golf Club is open with strict safety guidelines in effect. Read more here.

All Schaumburg Park District playgrounds are closed until further notice. K-9 Dog Park is also closed. Trails remain open, however please adhere to the following guidelines:

Overall Operations

Like most organizations, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a drastically negative impact on the Park District’s finances. Under regular operating conditions, program and membership fees account for approximately fifty percent of the District’s operating budget, while the other fifty percent comes from the District’s portion of local property taxes. We remain committed to good stewardship and accountability, and as such, the District has taken a number of difficult, but necessary steps to minimize operating costs, including temporarily reducing our workforce and eliminating 20 full-time positions. While we have some staff working to attend to core functions such as mowing grass, building maintenance, and customer service, we ask for your patience throughout this crisis. Some normal procedures including spraying for dandelions in parks and planting flowers at many of our facilities will not take place this summer as we focus on essential operations. If you need to reach us, please email or call 847-985-2115 between 8 a.m.- 5 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Refunds and Credits

We've had several questions regarding refunds and credits. Please review the information below:

Memberships: Fitness Center members who prepaid their membership will have their membership extended for the length of the closure. For example, if we are closed for two weeks, you will be granted a two-week extension on your membership. Moving forward, members who pay monthly will not be charged until fitness centers reopen.

Rentals and Parties: We are reaching out to all renters. If your party has been scheduled during this time, we will refund or reschedule your event without a cancellation or rescheduling fee.

Moving forward, KASPER, preschool and other programs with automatic billing will not be charged or billed during the closure.

All events that were scheduled to take place during the closure will be credited back to your Park District account. For refunds, click here.

If you have any questions regarding our refund policy, please email us at or call 847-985-2115 during normal business hours.

Please note that the above mentioned refund practices are being offered temporarily during this special closure and are not our standard policies.
