PLEASE NOTE: Due to construction, the Nature Center building will be closed on Friday, May 7. Scheduled programs will not be affected.

The Vera Meineke Nature Center at Spring Valley is an earth-sheltered, passive-solar natural history museum and visitor center. It includes interactive exhibits on local plants and animals, a children’s activity area, library, and living turtle pond display. Adjacent to the Nature Center is a Kid’s Vegetable Garden, Backyards for Wildlife display, and a new Monarch Rearing & Education Station. The Monarch Rearing Station operates from May – September and includes daily butterfly releases, weather permitting.

The Nature Center also provides information on programs and events, program registration, restrooms, and a gift sale area.

Hours of Operation

  • Nature Center: Saturday & Sunday, 12 p.m.-4 p.m.
  • Grounds & Trails: Daily, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.


  • Visitors to the Nature Center are limited to 12 people maximum per half-hour and are encouraged to make a reservation by calling (847) 985-2100. Walk-ins will be admitted when space is available – simply ring the doorbell.
  • Interior restrooms are not open to the public at this time. Portable toilets are available adjacent to all facilities.
  • It is anticipated that these facilities will expand open hours in May and into the summer.
